Day 292- Monday, December 28, 2009

Day 292:

This monument is a tribute to all the things that can be accomplished with just a little determination and a lot of ambition. I spent a whole 15 minutes at a work picnic this Summer laboring to build this, painstakingly risking failure and crippling defeat at the hands of cruel gravity and badly engineered Hot-Wheelery.

Do you think I gave up with Tonka Tower fell the first time? Do you think I gave up when the redesigned 5th generation Trump Tonka Tower fell? NO!

So, for those of you out there afraid to step out the door every morning and put yourselves on the line for what you love, remember, there is no task too pointless, no Hot Wheels tower too small.

"Remember, if you're gonna do something stupid, do it with gusto!"

Goodnight

Operation Screeching Night Zebra

Also Known As: Building Chris's Website

Jay and I got together for the second time to start work on the actual site tonight. We're both sort of noob at this so we've had a pretty good time goofing with it. Jay is getting to know the OCD me a lot better... heh heh...

The links and the banner aren't positioned right and that is not actually the home page image - just a tester. I just wanted to share this as a little teaser of what's coming soon. Very stoked.

Now, with the rollout of this shiny new website, I'm considering doing away with, or transmogrifying The Picture Book blog, as it would become somewhat redundant.
Just a thought.

Sooo, that's that. How's your mother?

Goodnight!

Day 285- Monday, December 21, 2009

Day 285:

Ambivalence # 2

You'll remember # 1 from last Wednesdsay; I believe a number of you got some weird, naughty vibes from that one; hmmm, understandable. Good good.

I've had some time to think about what I wanted to say regarding these photographs. What I really want to convey is the paradoxical nature of the ambivalent undoing. At some point, everyone becomes torn between poles in daily life, finding themselves scattered mentally and emotionally, or pulling apart in different directions. Sometimes the situation and its implications are benign, other times, not so.

This subject is very personal to me and so I will continue to appear in the series as it progresses.

I'm also drawn towards "the bedroom" as the stage for these photographs. I believe all of our bedrooms are to some degree an extension of ourselves. Our bedrooms play an integral role in our lives; they are a sanctuary, a place of rest and healing, a place of intimacy where we feel safe to share our deepest selves. On the other hand, our bedrooms can become a Hell, a place of isolation, stagnation and great pathos.

The relationship between a human being and that place which is such an influential part of them is a curious one, worth contemplation.

Here we go...

Day 281- Thursday, December 17, 2009

Day 281:

Note to self: Get off ass over Christmas and send this!

Kodachrome is purdy. However, the only place developing it these days is Dwayne's Photo in Kansas. Kind of a pain to send it but I gotta get off my butt and do that soon. I can't wait to get the shots back; I've been waiting too long. I hereby vow to do it in the next two-ish weeks.

DEAL

Goodnight!

Day 278- Monday, December 14, 2009

Day 278:

Just thought you'd like to see the textbook for my program.

HA. Kidding. But this is pretty much the greatest book I've ever been given. A popup photography book? Score!

Thanks to Ashley Watson in the rental cage at school for this baby. Now where do I put the film?

Note: Also, I hope this isn't like, some copyright infringement type thing... I just want to show off the awesomeness of the book... maybe if I rep the authors or something, it'll be cool.

So, many thanks to John Hedgecoe & Ron Van Der Meer for being awesome and nerdy enough to turn cutout paper shapes into my favorite thing in book form. You guys rock.

Day 272- Tuesday, December 8, 2009

Day 272:

Vecchio Frak

This shot comes from a collaborative effort between the good Melissa Di Pasquale and myself.
Cred to her for this shot.

Melissa was generous enough to bring me along to the restaurant that she found for our Restaurant Interior assignment. We both captured our own image for the assignment and then teamed up for several more to give to the owner. Hopefully they'll be used for the website. We also may have an opportunity to do some more shooting for them, so that's pretty cool.

It's been a long and busy day so I am getting my butt to bed.

Goodnight

(PS - We used the softest bloody wide lens. I have a serious bone to pick with the manufacturers.)

Monday, December 7, 2009

Day 271- Monday, December 7, 2009

Day 271:

"Me and my Dad"

Shot for my Stock Photography assignment. It's supposed to be something about insurance > family > you know... you love them... so wtf mate, protect them! > got it? > terrif.

You get the gist. I think I'll crop away the bottom in the final print. I don't know though, for these candid, cute, sharing-with-others kind of posts, I like to present things a little more "as is". I don't need all my family moments to be polished, savvy?

Alright so WOW. Got so much done today. Printed>mounted>handed in two Commercial assignments really fast - no zillion test prints and tweaks, although a little minor surgery on the close cut thanks to Brenden Wilson's non-warped vision - I attended the final class/evaluation for Commercial AND I went and shot a cute little Italian restaurant on College with the lovely Melissa Deeeee.

Those shots will come.

Anyways, if I can, I will attempt to make this day officially the most productive ever and complete my last Theory project, entitled, "Just How Sinister and Sadistic Can Professor Rob Allen Get?"

... but really, Rob's a very good guy, heh heh. Much love.

And to you!

GOODNIGHT!

Day 270- Sunday, December 6, 2009

Day 270:

Commercial Studio Class: Close Cut Assignment - Final

Here it is. It's incredible how these projects force you to become a one man production machine - researcher, buyer, photographer, retoucher, graphic designer and copywriter.

All I have to say is, it took waaaaay too long to make this... grrrr.

Goodnight; obscene day tomorrow.

Sleep safe.

Saturday, December 5, 2009

Day 269- Saturday, December 5, 2009

Day 269:

Commercial Studio Class: Close Cut > Ad Creation Assignment

Close Cut: Shooting a product in front of a solid colour (white) background, with black cards placed around (and slightly behind) the object to frame it. Enables easy "cutting out" of object from background for photoshopping into... anything you want.

The Close Cut is really essential for commercial photography. When you see products in advertisements, quite often they're not physically photographed in front of their final background. The technique just makes isolating products easy and super fast.

So, one of our final Commercial assignments this semester is to create an ad from a close cut product. I started work at about 9 tonight; it's 3:45 am and I'm still not finished. Actually, even better than that, I just waited about 20-25 minutes (not a shred of exaggeration) for the file to save, only to find out at the end that it exceeded 4 gigs and could not save. Let's just say, 39 megapixel Hasselblads aren't ALWAYS the best, k? Their files just KIND of suck...

So, even though I couldn't finish the ad tonight, I figured I'd share. This is NOT the finished product. Lots will change. The screen capture shows the saving progress bar around 97% finished. It stayed that way for about 15 minutes.

.... sigh....

Goodnight!

... or is it Good Morning?

Friday, December 4, 2009

Day 268- Friday, December 4, 2009

Day 268:

Commercial Studio Class: Blu Ray Assignment - Mockup

This isn't the final image I'm handing in. I finished that one a while ago but used another background that doesn't belong to me. I need to get permission from a friend of mine before I post it anywhere so, I just tossed another quick background in. It actually looks kinda cool, although I don't think it fits as well with the copy.

Anyways, that's the general concept, so, hope it's good.

... God I wish I had Don Draper on my side...

Night!

Day 267- Thursday, December 3, 2009

267:

Whoo. So I need a sort of a night off I think.

I had an interview for a potential internship opportunity today with the studio manager of an incredibly talented and succesful fashion photographer in Toronto.

He was honest, unapologetic and to the point. He had some seriously heavy things to say about my portfolio and it was pretty intense.

BUT, as harsh as it was, it was incredibly positive to me in the grand scheme of things. His critique gave me a lot of new perspective and I have a lot of thinking to do. I'm not at all bummed out! I'm gonna keep pushing damnit!

But, my brain is kinda worn out from thinking about the events of tonight, and it's been a good, long day, so I'm gonna slack and post this picture from photobooth... I took it sometime last year. Woo.

PS - I'm feeling good about the internship...

Day 266- Wednesday, December 2, 2009

Day 266:

Mr. Adorable

...not to be mistaken with Mr. Manager...

You can find his new book along with many others in the Mr. Men series though. Fantastic read! But, don't take my word for it!

Goodnight!
